Chinoiserie wallpaper – a recurrent romantic fantasy of pagodas, paper lanterns, exotic flora and fauna – has always been the stuff of dreams.  In fact a “Chinese room” dressed in captivating hand-painted papers was de rigueur for palaces and grand estates in 18th century Europe.

Though one needn’t be royalty to buy original hand-painted Chinoiserie wallpaper today, the privilege still requires a princely sum.  But thanks to advances in printing, papers and inks, wallpaper manufacturers can now offer the look
for less.

Hand-screened wallpaper’s heavy inks and rich colors are now affordably yet intricately rendered on a rotary screen printer, often with eco-friendly metallic inks whose luminosity lends the look of layered, hand-applied pigment.

So the romantic reverie lives on, and today’s cheeky new Chinoiserie is so affordable it affords going out on a limb
with a fantastical pattern…which was exactly the original idea.
